Mommy, What is Celiac Disease? GIVEAWAY GALORE!!

"Mommy, what is celiac disease?"

How many parents had to answer that question? How do you explain everything that celiac disease entails to a young child? There are dozens of books that list symptoms, foods that are safe and those that should be avoided, recipes, tips for traveling, etc., but can you think of any that are geared towards children? Drawing a blank?

Luckily new author, Katie Chalmers, fills that void with her new children's book, Mommy, What is Celiac Disease? The story of a little girl and her mother playing at the park while talking about celiac answers the common questions that kids may have when they first learn they've been diagnosed with the disease. Which snacks are OK, can they still eat cake and ice cream at birthday parties, and what about sandwiches and fried foods? They all get answered.

The scientific aspects of gluten also get discussed. What gluten is, how it effects your body, and how to follow a gluten free diet are all mentioned. The book ends with a resource page and Chalmers' favorite gluten free go-to products.

I thought this book was adorable. Not only is the quizzical little girl darling, but the story explains celiac disease in the simplest of ways. While reading I thought to myself, "This book would be great for adults too!" I've had several encounters with people that just didn't get it. Mommy, What is Celiac Disease? breaks it down, making it understandable for anyone.

Oh my goodness! What an exciting giveaway - all my favorite things in a single bag! I was only recently diagnosed with celiac so there's been a lot of at-home baking, but I've been hesitant to venture out into stores. I do know I adore Panda Pudds, but the brownie mix, the bread mix, oh, it's so exciting! Thanks so much for this generous offer, and have a very happy holiday! =)

Very nice review, Betsy! :-) It's been a while since I've been to your blog ... love the clean and colorful feel of it! Who can resist polka dots, right? ;-) I'm so happy to be part of this event with Katie, you, and all the others!

FYI to all--There a few other books for children on celiac/gluten intolerance and eating gluten free, like Bagels, Buddy, and Me; Cilie Yack Is Under Attack; and Eating Gluten Free with Emily. I've only reviewed Bagels, Buddy, and Me so far and it's terrific, too. Love Katie's book; it's so beautifully done. We can't have enough great children's books on the topic. Often these simple books work well for all ages, more so than the heavy duty ones with lots of scientific/medical terms.

Hugs,
Shirley

I would love to win this giveaway because I work at an early intervention program that provides services to kids with developmental disabilities, many who are GF due to autism or celiac/gluten intolerance. I am gluten intolerant, and I know it’s hard enough to deal with eating GF as an adult. I always feel really bad for the kiddos that have to deal with it, and many families that live in this rural area are low income and don’t have access to transportation to get food at the nearest Sprouts or Whole Foods which are 40 miles away. I’d love to give this to a family who really needs it this Christmas!

i want to win this because my husband has celiac and we have an infant daughter whom would greatly benefit from having this book to be able to one day understand her daddy's reasons for not eating all the "normal" foods. also my husband is always becoming frustrated with his dietary restrictions and the difficulty we find in affording treats for him. this would make a marvelous Christmas gift for him!

i also liked both fb pages. thanks!!

I would love to win this give away, because as an insanely poor medical student it is very, very hard for me to try new GF products. Due to my lack of free time, it is so wonderful when I find an easy to make product that is also GF!! Winning this giveaway would be amazing, because it would give me the opportunity to try some new products that I otherwise wouldn’t be able to.

Hi,
I just read the article about Katie’s book that was printed in The Buffalo News. I live in a small town about 30 miles south of Buffalo. My youngest daughter is 7 and was just diagnosed with celiac disease in November. When she was 2, she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She has been on an insulin pump since she was 4 and is doing great! She had no symptoms of celiac, but, her routine blood work done by her diabetes doctor showed the markers for celiac. After the upper endoscopy, we knew for sure. We met with a nutritionist, and things are going very well. It is more work for sure, but it helps us to all be healthier! Our other 3 children had blood work done to test for celiac…and my second daughters(she’ll be 11 on 01-01-11) results came back positive. She will be meeting with a GI doctor on Dec. 22nd, I’m sure this will be to schedule an upper endoscopy. She cried at first when we told her, but then realized this is something that would bring her and her sister closer together. I would love to win this giveaway to surprise my girls with some goodies
