One thing I am ready for is the candy! When I was diagnosed with celiac disease I was very, very happy that most candy is gluten free. I worked in a candy store at the time and I was still be able to eat about 95% of the products. I was okay with having to pass up cakes and cookies, but it would have been very difficult to give up chocolates or caramels.
Some candies are obviously unsafe for the gluten free dieter such as Kit Kats, Take5, Whoppers, Twix, and Crunch Bars. Others may seem safe, like Twizzlers or Airheads, but they do contain gluten. Always check labels!
Sure Foods Living has a great list of candies and which allergens they contain. If there are Halloween parties at school, be sure that your child's teacher has this list from the NFCA. It lists safe candies AND snacks.
To help make things a no brainer, Enjoy Life Foods has three chocolate bars that are gluten free, dairy free, soy free, and nut free! boom CHOCO boom bars come in:
- dairy-free rice milk
- dairy-free rice milk with crispy rice
- dark chocolate
They are also incredibly delicious! Last week when I attended the University of Chicago's annual celiac screening, the Enjoy Life table was giving out their boom CHOCO boom bars. I shared one with my 4-year old nephew and he LOVED it!
offering all three varieties of their boom CHOCO boom bars to one lucky Gluten Free Betsy trick-or-treater!
